Harmony for the Mind Music Event: Wellness & De-stress through Music

Wellness & De-stress through Music was a music-based stress-relief activity organised on 3 October 2025 by Master of Arts in Music Education students from the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr Thibeault Matthew Doran. This activity was part of their course, Socio-Psychological Perspectives in Music & the Arts.
During the session, six student groups enthusiastically guided participants through rhythm-based exercises involving clapping and stepping, which synchronised movements and fostered a lively group energy. Participants joined in singing cheerful songs such as ‘You Are My Sunshine’ and ‘Lemon Tree,’ creating a warm and uplifting atmosphere. The session also included stretching exercises set to music, helping to ease physical tension and promote relaxation.
Live performances on ukulele, flute, xylophone, and piano enriched the experience with a soothing soundscape that engaged everyone, regardless of their musical background. Participants were encouraged to join in with clapping and light singing, allowing them to connect with the music and each other in a supportive environment. The interactive rhythms and melodies helped release stress and foster a sense of calm and joy.
Overall, the activity provided a rewarding and refreshing experience, demonstrating the simple yet powerful role of music in promoting wellbeing. It offered an inclusive and enjoyable way for participants to reduce anxiety and enhance their mental health.
